Dovedale is a beautiful valley in the Peak District National Park; 40 minute drive from the Portland Hotel, which is owned and managed by the National Trust. A renowned beauty-spot, Dovedale is best known for its impressive limestone ravines. Once you arrive at the nearby car park its just a short walk across a wooden bridge to get to the River Dove. There you can continue passed Thorpe Cave and carry on up the river which is a great family friendly walk with lots of wildlife and woodlands to explore along the riverside pathway.

Edale is a small village in the Peak District National Park and can be found in the Hope Valley just a few miles from Castleton or a short 25 minute drive from the Portland Hotel.

Edale Village is best known to be the start or finish of the Pennine Way, which is 268 miles of the finest upland walking in England. Found on the Manchester to Sheffield train line the village itself has a cafe, local shop and two pubs popular with tourists and locals alike. Also located in Edale is the Moorlands Visitor Centre which is a tourist information centre and a flagship centre for moorland research which is a inspirational experience.

The Tissington Trail is the former London and North Western Railway (LNWR) between Buxton and Ashbourne. Starting from Parsley Hay Cycle Hire; just a short 30 minute drive from the Portland Hotel, you can follow the trail all the way to Ashbourne. Suitable for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair friendly its a great family day out passing through 13 miles of Peak District National Park.

Looking for something energetic and family friendly? Visit the Monsal Trail, start from Blackwell Mill Cycle Hire only a 12 minute drive from the Portland Hotel. A traffic free former midland railway line for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users that takes you through some of the Peak Districts most spectacular Dales.

Pass through the Monsal Trail Tunnels which have gone through a £2.25 million repair project with funding from the Department of Transport. Four of the tunnels are lit during daylight hours making them safe to use, however it's advised to take a torch just in case of a power cut!

The Monsal Trail tunnels offer one of the most spectacular leisure routes in Britain for cycling, walking and horse riding. It is the first time the public have been able to go through the tunnels since the former Midland Railway Line closed in 1968.
